What is a Tutor?
Hi, my name is Harvey Fenigsohn. As a teacher who appreciates colorful cultures and fascinating people, I was drawn to Literacy Volunteers, where I have tutored for nine years. Recently retired, I additionally volunteer in the Worcester Public Schools, and at Catholic Charities, assisting immigrants in a citizenship class. I have come to respect the ambition and courage of newcomers who depart their home land to make new lives in this country. Their admirable determination to master our difficult language motivates me to make the best effort possible to help them succeed.
My present student, a Liberian aged 25, overcame great adversity before finding his way to Worcester as a political refugee. In addition to English he speaks his native Mandingo and French. He remains determined to find a job, and become a US citizen. Above all he dreams that his wife and child, still in Africa, will someday join him here.
My student strives to improve his English pronunciation while learning to read and write well enough to qualify for gainful employment. Given his great determination, I know he will achieve his goals.
